There is always a time and a place for great songs to appear. Then years-old, lyricist Bernie Taupin scribbled down the stark, simple and poetic words one morning in There is a magical innocence that is forever embedded in the lyrics. Lyrically, the love song is drawn with vague references to an unnamed lover. Taupin claimed the song was written with no one particular lover in mind, while John has often commented that it is based on an ex-girlfriend of his. It gets better every time I sing it.
It was written by John and his longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin. Both songs received airplay, but "Your Song" was preferred by disc jockeys and replaced "Take Me to the Pilot" as the A-side, eventually making it to number eight on the Billboard chart. The song also peaked at number seven on the UK Singles Chart , as well as charting in the top 10 in several other countries. John was an opening act for the band at the time and allowed them to record it. They did not release it as a single as they wanted to let John, then an upcoming artist, have a go with it. A demo version was included in John's box set album To Be Continued.
No sooner has Taupin contemplated a shave in the bathroom mirror, than Elton has bashed out a melody and finished the song. We went into the room where the piano was and just hammered it out. It came out in about 20 minutes, and when I was done, I called him in and we both knew. If the lyrics sound naive, it's because they were: Taupin was only 17 when he wrote them, and had never experienced romantic love — not really. So he put down his idea of what it might be like on to paper. That was exactly what I was feeling. John had been making headlines in the US thanks to a run of incendiary performances at legendary LA venue The Troubadour. But in the UK, audiences were frustratingly slow to catch on. The rest, as they say, is history.
Just let things keep going. It time with him I value most. Then on one of his lighter weeks when we get some quality time together and text more I reinvest myself and the resentment disappears because I think things are progressing into a real relationship That's also great advice about how to talk to him. About two years into our marriage, I got sick of waiting in bed for him to come read scriptures with me. That settles it for me.
